Most people don't sever connections because they actually see 'god' in the idealistic sense but because there's an opportunity for a more secure future. For many people, this boils down to an opportunity for more money, even though it's often masked in another ideal.

The friend who is left behind then is right to be angry or upset. There is a sense of false conviction or hypocritical faith. The chosen god is a god of a world where that friend is deadweight. Doesn't seem like a very godly thing to do.
