I think... vulnerability is basically allowing yourself to be slapped in the face instead of preemptively slapping yourself in the face to avoid the world doing so...

The advantage of bullying yourself with is that you have control and predictability. The slap isn't a surprise. The disadvantage is that it easily becomes a script that repeats over and over again. When the world slaps you, it's mostly an unintentional accident.
