Money is the ultimate resource of independence. The downside is that because you never truly need anyone (you can just find someone/something else) you never truly receive. Friends just become commodities.
When you no longer "need" your friends you can no longer maintain the friendship. E.g. if you start making lots of money, a friendship that revolved around mutual financial support will dissolve if that was the only thing the friendship revolved around.
It doesn't mean the friendship was fake. The revolving DID happen. It's just that there's no longer anything to revolve around NOW.
