I think a lot of modern-day therapy basically helps people adjust and reconcile themselves to bad social institutions
Many of the more spiritually leaning attitudes towards therapists is that they help you be the 'right' kind of insane. E.g. if an institution enslaves, you should install a bunch of slave scripts. The hippies for example were the same as anarchists in the eyes of the state.
