I think the lesson is that evil can’t be destroyed. You can only put it to sleep. The magic crystal that seals away the evil doesn’t actually contain the evill. It just hides away the symbol that stirs the darkness within us.

I used to wonder why in stories and games some hero would sacrifice themselves only to seal away some great evil. Why couldn’t they just destroy it instead?
