Selfishness and selflessness seems to always be balanced. Some of the most selfish and ‘evil’ people I’ve met, when digging deeper, have selflessly given away all of themselves to some ideology, institution, identity, etc...

Have you found selfish vs. selfless behavior to be a useful delineation for making sense of people? So far, I have.
For me it's more about boundaries. Missionary types for example believe themselves to be selfless but are aggressive in selfishly pushing into boundaries. It's difficult to work with people who have a "you're either w/ me or against me" stance.
