How do you determine if a question is useful?
In theory, if it makes you curious. In practice, you have to ask clarifying questions first to build a safe relationship. Otherwise that curiosity manifests as confusion and creates conflict.

E.g. being curious about the person first “how’s the weather?” (or equivalent) before curiosity about the topic.
