Soldiers die for each other more than they do for their country. The distance between hierarchies of power in military cultures is intentional. Without the gap that defines the "other", there is no "us".

A team is dysfunctional when most people on the team actually want to be part of another team. E.g. part of management, leadership, etc...

"Knowing your place" is often oppressive but without respect for boundaries there is no sense of "We" and without this community feeling there is no sense of "I" and without this sense of "I", you are lost. Because you don't have anything worth dying for anymore.
