Being at the top of hierarchies often requires you to be optimistic to everyone but because of the visibility you have to unintentionally ghost quite a few people. Executives can often feel 'fake' because of this mismatch between presented self and actual behavior.

With social networking apps, an entire generation now has this ghosting habit. It's not just towards individuals but towards information in general. Ignoring something that is reaching out to you from the world has become acceptable.

A family unit is bound together by blood. Whatever crazy stuff occurs in a family *has* to be dealt with. It can't be ignored. This is the price paid for family.

Traditionally this habit was available only to those at the top of hierarchies and in the middle of networks. Power and Popularity. CEOs, jocks, and cheerleaders. In-group and out-group.

Opening up our ability to connect to the world allows everyone to find an audience and popularity. Ironically it creates loneliness because it makes it cheap to find an 'alternative family' just as porn is a form of 'alternative love'.

Money corrupts in a similar manner. It makes things "cheap" because money is not always tied to time/sacrifice. If you understand money, you can get money to work for you, disconnecting its value from actual sacrifice.

If you've ever quite playing a video or board game despite all the DLCs or expansions it adds...then you know the existential feeling of the rich. No matter how much you "add" to your world, it all seems the same flavor. The world is technically huge, but feels tiny and boring.
