What a breakthrough when I realized most people doing creative work weren't trying to make great creative work, they had other agendas.
Can you expand? What I felt is that many people are far more interested in building up their portfolio which is in turn used only as a surrogate activity to build up their own self image. True creativity requires internalizing "It's not about you".

Sure, happy to. I kept seeing people who self-identify as artists or writers were not putting work/time/rigor in, and were OK putting out very mediocre product. This confused me! Why were they getting in the boxing ring so obviously out of shape &untrained, where was their pride?

I think the behavior you point out is definitely "a thing," but also that there are lots of other, similar things people are up to, many of which revolve around identity: ego libido, cultivating sensitivity, "expression" (which I've never understood, but)
