"You are your own worst enemy" is the spiritual equivalent of the modern "You have ADD/Depression/some other mental disorder." Regardless of why the wolf is in your mind, the wolf is always in _your_ mind.

Eg: You have ADD due to genetics & childhood. It is _true_ that you have strained relationships with everyone and it's "their" fault. But it's "their" fault only because there are very few 'perfect' adults in the world. Only _you_ can repair the relationship with yourself.

Or another analogy. Only _you_ have access to your source code, even if you don't know how to program. Even if you were blindly following instructions of others when young and messed everything up. Even if it doesn't compile.

The acceptance that it's always _your_ fingers on the keyboard is taking on 'full' responsibility. It's the burden/weight that promotes growth and strength on the path to 'perfect' adulthood.

This is the core strength of american culture IMO. The frontier cowboy takes full responsibility for his life. It's not prevalent nowadays. It exists mostly in the form of moral preaching from the already wealthy who are too disconnected from everyday people.

_This_ is the 'lost religion' of america that has become a cargo cult for those seeking wealth, and a point of resentment and victimhood for everyone else.

The original message: "Don't be a victim" The cargo cult message: "Conquer everything/everyone else, make _them_ victims." The non-believer hears: "It's all your fault." (and so rejects the entire religion as not rooted in love)

Replying to @snepsnepsnep @a_yawning_cat
If everyone is absolutely committed to choosing death before dishonour, then there is no incentive for aggressors to victimize anyone.

Soldiers killing soldiers are choosing death on both sides though, e.g. valhalla viking's are still pretty aggressive. I think the 'core' truth is an egoic death via sacrifice which is conflated with physical death. Prob is that the former feels like 'bending over'.
