Or another analogy. Only _you_ have access to your source code, even if you don't know how to program. Even if you were blindly following instructions of others when young and messed everything up. Even if it doesn't compile.

The acceptance that it's always _your_ fingers on the keyboard is taking on 'full' responsibility. It's the burden/weight that promotes growth and strength on the path to 'perfect' adulthood.

This is the core strength of american culture IMO. The frontier cowboy takes full responsibility for his life. It's not prevalent nowadays. It exists mostly in the form of moral preaching from the already wealthy who are too disconnected from everyday people.
