The question of god then is a thought experiment to train your mind to act individually rather than be swept along with circumstance. It's like a koan. It's asking you to deadlift a mountain and so build strength through humility by marveling at the impossibility of the task.
The grand battle for ego is to convince itself if there is or isn't a god. It doesn't matter the result since neither can be 'proved'. The important thing is that through this battle you can eventually apply choice to what you believe.

It's rather impractical. Trying to deadlift a mountain doesn't actually build strength. The lesson of humility is lost on you if you've never built up worldly strength.
