This makes me think of polished rocks. Apes are like shiny rocks while humans are like mirrors. The closer you are to the 'perfect' mirror state the greater the 'indra's net' effect. You start to see how everything is connected vs from a singular perspective.
Apes are limited in that they can only see from the perspective of a tribe. Like obsidian. You can polish it to a mirror sheen but because of the base material there is a cap to how reflective it can be.
