Too much freedom is bad because you can then choose not to be free. The strict parents who smack their children to get better grades intuitively understand this

Discipline can lead to higher degrees of freedom because you don't fall into traps of temptation. The 'artist' archetype falls into this trap a lot because they misinterpret following your passion as avoiding the difficult and hard things that increase discipline.
