An idea that weakens considerably without threat of death is "country". If you can't die for your country then you can't live for it. Without the threat of death or the presence of "enemy", a country ceases to exist.

The value of a thing exists in proportion to how ephemeral and fragile it is. If it's immortal and forever you may as well take it for granted. Literally that's the intent of making something granted.

A fine china dining set is sacred. It can last forever. But it is not infinitely sacred because it lacks self-destructfulness. A baby is sacred. It has a whole human life ahead of it and a perilous journey to get to the end.

Flower are also sacred. When their fragility is replaced for artificiality, they lose their sacredness and just become visual ornamentation. This loss is felt, but cannot be described without a shared language with which to discuss God.

The greatest disadvantage of losing religion is the web of concepts, stories, and terms with which you could talk about the divine indirectly. Every idea become petrified over time, losing their ability to channel the divine because it is out of touch with reality.
