You can't really stop someone from doing something when they feel it is their life's purpose. That they literally would have to choose suicide over not doing what they're doing.

This is the trade-off soldiers make for their power. They have to serve some idealogy. If they choose wrongly, they don't have the flexibility to change. It's loyalty to the end. Preserved with extreme violence if necessary.

This level of self-delusion is something everyone is capable of. To kill someone of a different race because you really feel they're like insects. To rape someone because you really feel they enjoy it.
