You can't really stop someone from doing something when they feel it is their life's purpose. That they literally would have to choose suicide over not doing what they're doing.

They manage though because hierarchical layers concentrate power so that a single individual's courage can lead the entire org. The pseudo-passion provides the energy at the cost of courage while the power structure amplifies the courage of a super minority.

These behemoths are unstable though. That single person's deficiencies are also amplified in a loudspeaker like fashion. They are under increasing pressure to act as heroic gods so as not to cripple the system. To fake it before you make it they must self delude into gods.

Power corrupts is because power is the cursed armor of hubris. You are unstoppable because you are desensitized. You can't be stopped from doing anything but because you have dampened sense you need to rely on people to tell you what to do.

This is the trade-off soldiers make for their power. They have to serve some idealogy. If they choose wrongly, they don't have the flexibility to change. It's loyalty to the end. Preserved with extreme violence if necessary.
