Something non-obvious about Hong Kong is that many Chinese people are actually offended that people would rather riot and raise american flags than be “part of China” (cont.)

They feel that the US media portrays them as brainwashed idiots serving a corrupt government out of cowardice when it is actually their home, warts and all.

From many citizen’s and from the governments perspective, there is a lot of US hypocrisy. There’s quite a bit of schadenfreude since the riots and police brutality in the US offer an alternative narrative.

Which is that of being looked down on and negatively portrayed unfairly. Historically China as a country has felt violated, bullied, and even raped for its resources.

For some, capitalism was considered evil but a necessary one because it was the only way for the industrialization, productivity, and specialization of labor for a stronf country. You can’t do much with a country of peasants.

When nuclear weapons were created there was huge celebration. Finally, an equal playing field. Now longer a need to bend over for the hypocrites who are doing things “for your own good.”

You can see this sentiment echoed in films like Ip Man and even in the choice if national sport, Ping Pong. “Skill” and hard work(kung fu) beats pure strength looking down on and bullying the weak.
