a common speed reading tactic is "stop subvocalizing" this is backwards advice. when people learn to read, they more or less seem to identify symbols with their sounds, and go from the spoken version of the symbol to the meaning.

China actually produces a ton of people who can read and understand very well, academic/phd level. However listening & speaking tend ti be weak. Lopsided strengths due to prevalence of text but much fewer native speakers. I wonder what their internal vocalization is like.

Yeah, mostly non-fiction or technical stuff though. Drops off sharply for science fiction, fantasy, etc...
