Is there a good example of something that occurs in nature, so humans have observed it throughout history, but we eventually learned how to make or engineer it much more efficiently / effectively?

Attention. Tech monetized it via the concept of “eyeballs”. The free market coordinated it. Now the issue is how to get more of it. It’s not time, it’s energy. How do we create more caring and more energy in the world. The kids seem to know. That’s why we follow them.
