I’m starting to become suspect of simple explanations for complex phenomena. We crave for simple narratives but it may be true that for many phenomena - say markets, intelligence, culture - there may not be an all encompassing theory that we’re capable of understanding.
I do think there are certain “eureka” insights that make things suddenly understandable though. In math there was a huge difference for me in memorizing stuff and pretending to understand vs suddenly having all that memorized stuff come together due to one specific idea.
