“I don’t want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members.” - Groucho Marx If you’re only accepting people who want to be part of your group, you‘re lowering the bar. No matter how intense your trials and gatekeeping are.
A group has to balance between members who join to be cool and members who give up coolness to be part of the group. Too much of the former and membership can have negative value. (Unions come to mind)
