religion as a way of transmitting spiritual concepts via packaged metaphor is still very effective. It’s main failings are (1) corruptibility as the interpretors can shift the stories for their own ends. And:

(2) they’re based in their root cultures from long ago where boundaries were far stricter. Women especially are often left out b/c that was just the norm at the time.

Because there is currently nothing more effective, a return to religion actually increases overall “spirituality” short term but at the cost of reverting to unnecessary conservatism.

I remember when first living by myself i’d leave the tv on for background noise b/c the silence was so scary. Dealing with the noise doesn’t work without first working through the fear.

And unfortunately, working through fear and developing courage almost always requires dealing with pain. The more pain is avoided through lack of disciline and complacency, the more suffering there is.

Markets can only sell drugs as anything external always leads you away from pain. That’s what a drug is, something external that lets you avoid or numb yourself to pain.

Markets unify people the same way getting drunk together does. It’s a form of camaraderie for sure but it’s a very masculine form. It’s a brotherhood more than a family.
