I wonder if the families that do do this type of isolation also have more pragmatic and protocol based relationships.
Sharing pain has a real world analog of willingly contracting coronavirus by refusing to isolate a family member.

The implicit notion is that emotional pain is fake, so sharing it has no cost. Physical illness is real, so real measures must be taken.

Though perhaps... when you’re truly sharing the pain of someone who is depressed or sees no point in living you take on huge risk by willingly allowing those thoughts to run in your own mind.

That’s MORE dangerous than coronavirus. Most of us only nod and pretend to emphasize. It takes someone who has been through those thoughts who is strong enough to share that pain.
