If we were serious as a society, we'd erect statues: - In front of hospitals, to excess bed capacity - In front of stock exchanges, against bailouts - In squares, on tail risks So that we never get complacent again. Oral traditions are not enough; we need timeless conspicuosity
Complacency is the best way of maintaining status through posturing though. Many managers and directors for example rise to their positions because they have the simple ability of keeping the status quo, e.g. doing everything they can to make sure nothing happens.

If that narrative breaks down you end up with a “meritocracy”. In which case the people of countries like China and India collectively go “Hey.. wait a second...”

Put another way, complacency not only signals leadership but also creates it since it’s all faith based narratives. I used to be very disappointed in my “leaders” but looking back, they may have had their hands tied.
