Preparing for shortages feels sort of morally degrading. It's one thing to buy extra food/supplies so you don't have to leave the house for a few weeks, but it's quite another to stock up while thinking "if supply chains go down, *other* people will suffer, not me."

The degrading part is that it's a death reminder that pierced through every veil of Status, Power, and Money. Many people who proudly (and rightly) know that it's not life to live in fear are having to re-examine their relationship with being human.
