In tech everything is a ball of mud. Everyone is buying and selling packages of crap in larger and larger bundles. The more difficult and complex things become, the more the solution is to create more bundled complexity.

Index funds are like this. Everyone knows the needle is somewhere in the haystack but the bulk of the ecosystem becomes dedicated to manipulating bales of hay rather than doing something with needles.

Why do anything that won't be appreciated or wanted when you can just add more hay to the existing hay. No one can tell the difference anymore anyway.
