There is a general purpose "being good at things" skill set and this is so obviously true that it's really weird to me that people hardly ever seen to acknowledge that this is the case.

The core skill within that skillset IMO is courage. The ability to navigate without a map because you can face the territory without looking away. If you grow up relying on great maps you succeed, but you never gain the generic ability to face unknown territories.
