They give up too easily "It hurts so it must not be for me." The trick I think, is that most of our pain is social pain and we're either socialized to find the "thinking" route or the "body" route more of less painful. Thus the stereotypes of dumb jock and skinny nerd.
Smart students enjoy the pain of learning because they've felt the sweet release of insight (or gold stars from teacher) Often those same student don't realize that the same pain from physical activities like sports or working out have similar results.

Discipline and courage are the first of all virtues precisely because they allow us to deal with our pain. Not rely on environmentally cued pain-relievers.
