The popularity of astrology is one of the few things that makes me feel really despondent about current culture. It seems such low hanging fruit for even a basic amount of self-skepticism. Can any astrology supporters explain why they believe it?

So to avoid one form of mindlessness, you choose to surrender yourself to another, more archaic form of mindlessness ? A "coherent" (debatable) identity one gains through blind and unsubstantiated belief is not chosen, it's imposed.
I don’t think it’s as defeatist as you’re implying. I think being able to have fun reading a fortune cookie or similar is not a weakness of character. Plus I dunno, Lindy effect or something.

It is fun ! I read my horoscope all the time, play with tarot cards, and I laugh. It doesn't guide me or define my identity beyond the aesthetic though. It's simply fuel for the imagination and the creation that sometimes follows it (which in contrast is something you own).
