“The framework is intended to identify risks..., as well as to map out how things that can be done differently...or how to respond to a failure after launch.” Great summary of key points of our paper by

This is one of the kindest things has ever done! Whenever I hear that music now I have a Pavlovian response that fills me with dread, and the expectation that I'll be listening it on loop for about 40mins until I finally get to speak to someone.

But despite all the advice from regulators, legal experts, human rights groups and ethicists to pause at least until the huge rights risks addressed - apparently “now is the time to start to make operational deployments”. This is cavalier and totally irresponsible. 🤬🤦🏼‍♀️

Cites “broad public support” for FR - how/where is this measured?! There’s been no public debate, no consultation with Londoners whose faces will be scanned. Do people understand how it’s used, do they have a way to opt out? Covering up -> suspicion; avoiding area = chill factor.

SWP/Bridges case does not indicate legal mandate: judgment explicitly stated decision was limited to that case. Biometrics and Info Commissioners both called for national framework and advised a pause til then. Not to mention incompatibility with international human rights laws.

Can’t believe my ears. Met Police Assistant Comissioner says there is “a strong legal mandate” to operationalise facial recognition tech across London. This is not true! We are sorely lacking a national framework for law enforcement use of FR in the UK.

This is desperately sad. Decades of industrial decline and economic hardship is no joke (and also no fault of the EU).

My piece for on why tragic stories like Errol Graham's are symptomatic of a benefits system that not only fails to protect the most vulnerable, but is institutionally and cultural incapable of effectively supporting ill & disabled people.

Discussion of surveillance tech - like facial recognition - all too often focusses exclusively on its impact on individual privacy. But it will also harm our freedoms to act collectively - at protest, football or even community festivals.

What I want to hear right now at in response to Benkler is from tech workers in the room leveraging their power inside corporate entities to challenge practices of exploitation and oppression. Which I know folk are doing!

Ironically, the story of the spread of social credit mythos would make a better Black Mirror episode than the system itself. One about believing mediated online content over our own senses, experiences, and memories. About 'interesting' stories getting more bandwidth than truth.
