I just...this is not how I would describe it. US and other diplomats are not naive; this is why they've told their citizens to leave and dramatically reduced their presence. USG officials are not the powerless ones "clinging to hope" in this situation. Afghan civilians are.
All talks are useless.
The US has no interest in peace talks neither wishes for a peaceful Afghanistan. Their agenda is to erupt civil war among the Afghan nation to survive in the region as a player. But the game is over.
