Oh, and to Franz's other point, the UN should really make an effort to do better on this account, and make a concerted effort not to cite seemingly random, nebulously sourced figures on this and any number of other Taliban issues...
Agreed as you know. The next question: Can the UN do that, in it's current set-up?
Fair... but surely they can do a bit better than publishing anonymous "intelligence estimates" as implied fact or evidence? (and, of course, the UN is big and full of many brilliant people, and not all of the UN does this...)
Basic question is, is the UN impartial in the war in Afghanistan when it publishes information regarding the Taliban? Personally, I don't believe for a second.
