Because I'll be late for my own funeral, I've finally finished @a_a_jackson and @florian_weigand's report on Taliban courts. I'm curious: do the authors believe that media reports of hudud punishments make a distinction b/t local justice mechanisms vs. Taliban rulings?

The Taliban didn't 'do it' -- but they looked the other way. (ahem, much like the govt often...but I digress) They're complicit, and accountable for allowing extrajudicial punishment (or whatever we might call it) that violates the norms that they claim to adhere to

That said -- we were looking for non-hudud cases. Total speculation, but I suspect hudud cases form the minority of what the Taliban courts deal with. And that beyond that, some customary authorities mete out other punishments (stoning, killing) whilst Taliban looks the other way
