I'm teaching a course on international humanitarian action at Brandeis. Students are interested in successful case studies of public humanitarian advocacy. Tell me what source I can send to them that best represents a success story.
The replies say it all! Tough one - really I'd tell them to go find one. The lesson might be there is no clear cut, black/white success. It's all messy. I like the MSF case studies for this:https://www.msf.org/speakingout
This is a great question. In my course I teach two advocacy case studies: Somalia/2011 sanctions advocacy and Yemen 2015 advocacy around the blockade and civilian protection. Both examples where humanitarian advocacy helped make terrible conditions somewhat less terrible.
And I think "somewhat improving the awfulness of existing policy" is usually the best-case impact. There's been a lot written around Somalia; less about advocacy on Yemen.
