What this piece does very well is illustrate how grotesquely things (at least in public) have deteriorated into a war of semantics, insults and terminology parsing over how many people each side *might* agree to refrain from killing and for how long *if* a US-Taliban deal happens
The kicker is this: there is “no indication that the features of” the 2019 US-Taliban draft agreement have “dramatically changed” since US-Taliban talks were called off in Sept Since then, the NYT estimates that at least 957 pro-govt forces and 550 civilians have been killed
