This could be just me -- but the Taliban appears to have shifted its messaging (and the way they are transmitting those messages) in recent weeks/months. I'd be curious to hear what @ThJohnsonNPS or others have to say about it...

They must know that, from here on, they’ll have to establish their legitimacy in the press and look like they are controlling the process. They’re telling NBC they're on the verge of intra-Afghan talks, a subtle step further than what they’ve said beforehttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/taliban-aiming-inclusive-afghan-government-spokesman-says-n1103656 …

And they’re telling TOLO that they’re internally consulting about a ceasefire, a far bigger step.https://tolonews.com/afghanistan/taliban-gets-go-ahead-ceasefire-elders-sources …

I had heard that some tried to surrender - I find that very interesting (source?). The TB had tried for at least 4 yrs before their release to get them back. There were a number of possible negotiating possibilities that were premised on their release yrs before the Berdahl deal.

I think there’s some evidence at least on Khairkhwa but who knows, honestly. Its probably a weak point, but the divergence btn how they treated their guys and how the US treated their guy broke my heart

The speed with which public opinion turned against Bergdahl seemed almost incomprehensible; *except* a foundation was already in place, especially in right wing media.
