This could be just me -- but the Taliban appears to have shifted its messaging (and the way they are transmitting those messages) in recent weeks/months. I'd be curious to hear what @ThJohnsonNPS or others have to say about it...

They turned a POW who they tortured, who repeatedly resisted, tried to escape, into a traitor by playing the western media and US domestic politics. (Side note: some of the Talibs swapped for Bergdahl had tried to surrender. They unlike Bergdahl were welcomed back as heroes)

I can’t speak to the role of Taliban propaganda but the reason veterans turned on him was bc he walked off a FOB in an act of extremely narcissistic hubris which led to a predictable manhunt in which soldiers were killed or maimed for life.
