This could be just me -- but the Taliban appears to have shifted its messaging (and the way they are transmitting those messages) in recent weeks/months. I'd be curious to hear what @ThJohnsonNPS or others have to say about it...

That isn’t quite the story I’ve heard on the ground, but it’s the story they need their fighters to tell now. It is, of course, strategic. However much the roughness of their image allows people to underestimate them, they are incredibly good at strat comms.

They turned a POW who they tortured, who repeatedly resisted, tried to escape, into a traitor by playing the western media and US domestic politics. (Side note: some of the Talibs swapped for Bergdahl had tried to surrender. They unlike Bergdahl were welcomed back as heroes)

Should not surprising. We see their faces everyday. The group is in negotiations with the US & there is some reciprocation. Although the main talking points still stand. They want the ANDSF to surrender, a return of the Islamic Emirate & yeah them treating the prisoners fairly.
