This could be just me -- but the Taliban appears to have shifted its messaging (and the way they are transmitting those messages) in recent weeks/months. I'd be curious to hear what @ThJohnsonNPS or others have to say about it...
There’s the @sgreports's Taliban embed. Sure, @clarissaward did great piece earlier this year and there’s @AuliyaAtrafi’s extraordinary 2017 piece -- but they are making themselves (even field fighters) available to press in a way that would have been unheard of even a year ago
The @washingtonpost photos are striking not just because @LorenzoTug is a phenomenal photog – but because they are showing their faces, staring straight at the lens. This is new. They are more comfortable, open, and confident in showing themselves off to foreign journalists

One thing I’ve noticed-may/may not be linked at all-is that since early September, the frequency of their english language articles on VoJ is way down compared to the lead-up to the breakdown in talks. And the Dari/Pashto postings on a myriad of topics seem either on par or up.
There does seem to be some sort of shift in strat comms, though I always fear overspeculating on these things.
Ahh thanks, great question! I don’t monitor their output rigorously but their propaganda effort is strategically aimed at presenting themselves as the most legitimate & ethically superior actor. It’s their usual narrative, invoking a HR discourse & trying to expose ‘war crimes’
Yes, they are using the gullible and their platforms to rebrand their image and present themselves as a legitimate government in waiting. Wake up people.
