Preach @jmurtazashvili @_alice_evans I thought I was alone in finding conferences (at best) mostly a time-waste and (at worst) stale/unhelpful
Example: a prestigious conf at Oxford where I was told my proposed fieldwork on the Taliban was unnecessary & unacademic. LOLZ https://twitter.com/jmurtazashvili/status/1203675505695821832 …

But agreed: I find that there isn't a lot of genuine discussion that's more experimental, curious, and about the work at the conferences I've attended. That said, I may have erred in picking my confs. Being a war studies Ph.D. probably doesn't help, in terms of traditionalism ;)

I must be very thick, but it seems that studying the TB without fieldwork risks relying on old info. How else would we know about the areas they govern? OF COURSE you know they attempt to control the narrative! Too basic to even state.

Not thick. But so many academic books and journal articles are written on them (and on Afghanistan writ large, or other conflict contexts) without fieldwork. There's room for more theoretical approaches, of course, but the imbalance in IR is a little perplexing...
