As we approach 20 years and over $100b in U.S. aid to Afghanistan, it is kind of remarkable how little the field of development economics has to say about (the overall failure of) America's marquee nation-building effort.

Oh I know I'm being pedantic but also the approach to security because "not nation building" is, cf
@Thieristan, at the heart of many problems. Also social contract, history, foreign meddling +++. But I defer to the above on their opinions :-)
Definitely no genuine nation building ... but I think there’s a lot to explore, that hasn’t been, on the dev econ front. Like how a bloated quick impact aid economy distorts incentives in ways that (very effectively) drive the opposite effect of the stated purpose of the aid.

I mean, if you threw away expectations and normativity and the IC’s discourse of stability and nation building, you could write some really interesting econ pieces on what actually happened and why. I would love to read that...and it would certainly ruffle some feathers
