1/9 The lonely work of PhD writing led me down a hole reading the stuff written about ‘Afghanistan in transition’ circa 2012-14 Seems prescient now that everyone is talking about ‘post-peace’ (insert emoji of dripping sarcasm/head hits desk/sad face)

2/9 There are good lessons from 2014 about what analysis was useful, and still is, during wildly uncertain periods. Heartbreaking to read what might've been, but there are still hints about what could lie ahead. So here’s a tweet chain trip down memory lane.

3/9 Thinking 5-10 years ahead, using solid data to do it, is useful Specifically this. Thanks Richard Hogg et al at
@WorldBank! Could you do an update? Cold hard scenario planning would help right now, because no one has any idea where this is gonna go http://siteresources.worldbank.org/AFGHANISTANEXTN/Images/305983-1334954629964/AFTransition2014Vol2.pdf …1 vastaus 1 uudelleentwiittaus 4 tykkäystäNäytä tämä ketju -
4/9 Did I mention solid data? A lot of the theorizing about philosophizing/political about Kabul-centric dynamics proved incorrect or besides the pt. Doesn’t seem like it would’ve very been helpful at the time. Opinions on this are like (a certain body part): everyone has one

5/9 Plus Afg politicos are savvy, often 10 steps ahead of any policy wonk. Prospects for outsider influence here are pretty slim. Focusing on what the int com CAN influence over the long term is a better bet (*cough* power analysis, that looks beyond the Kabul elite, would help)

7/9 Also looking back and trying to learn from mistakes (harmful thought/behavior patterns, sticky yet erroneous assumptions).
@AANafgh compiled a (great) book on it, getting experts to reflect on what worked/didn’t in their sectors. I still refer to thishttps://www.afghanistan-analysts.org/publication/aan-e-books/aans-first-e-book-snapshots-of-an-intervention/ …1 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 1 tykkäysNäytä tämä ketju -
8/9 A much-needed companion could be done on peace: what works for comm-based peacebuilding, key players’ negotiating styles/experiences, lessons from trans justice/accountability, etc. Bits exist, but no one (?) has pulled it together (yet?) and drawn implications for the future

9/9 I’m just a freelancer wading through archived PDFs BUT If I was a policymaker, this is what I'd want (*cough* desperately need). If I were a donor, this is what I'd fund for the next 12-36 months* *decent research usually takes time; anything less=not worth it

Ashley, Keen to examine this nine-part thread. But it’s jumbled and part 7 is nowhere to be found. Please retweet.
