Is the US military spinning recent developments to an extent that defies even the most generous assessment of the Afghan situation? Yup. But that might not be a totally bad thing...https://twitter.com/thomasjoscelyn/status/1034442139910975489 …

Without the US military supporting a diplomatic end to the war, it won’t happen. For the military to get behind talks, I'd imagine they need to spin this as something other than defeat.

All sides will have to do this, and it won't be easy. And so this probably means they need to take credit for helping end the war (rather than acknowledging that deeply flawed strategy that has repeatedly made the conflict worse and prolonged it).

So I feel like: fine, okay. Whatever you need to be okay with de-escalating and backing a peace process, do it. I may think its totally implausible and outrageous but...what if it's also a sign of something else?

Maybe it signals slightly less dim prospects for ending this damn thing? A genuine shift in policy? Or maybe I’m deliriously optimistic and have been working on Afghanistan for so long that I am constantly looking for signs of hope where none exist Either is entirely possible
