David Reimer was transitioned to live as female at 9... he transitioned back to living as a male at age 15... that's 6 years... and he killed himself at 38... But yeah let's have a 5-year old study... tell us about the mental health of kids who transitioned at early age.

The lessons of his case are simple. 1. Don't circumcise kids 2. Don't force a gender identity on someone that they don't want Money was a monster, that doesn't mean everything he studied is automatically evil too, any more than the existence of Wagner makes all opera racist
-
I agree with you. But let's be real: Money is no different than Josef Mengele and both their research were done in an unethical manner and the validity of their results need to be questioned... like any scientific study.
-
Absolutely agreed. I just dislike some people's idea that because he was a terrible person the entire concept of gender should be thrown in the garbage, regardless of what merit it may have...
-
I'm in the camp that we should let kids be kids and go through the process of growing up and finding who they are, and when they fully understand things, if they need help, we need to be there for them. But I'm against pushing pseudo-scientific propaganda on impressionable minds.
-
Agree, in theory... If you wanna let kids be kids and not push pseudo-scientific propaganda on them, then we probably shouldn't be loading them down with ideas like homosexuality is unnatural, gender is binary and trans is gross before they even get to school. :/ Cuts both ways
-
Completely. I think these are topics that really don't make much sense to kids... teach them to be good to others, accept differences, to love themselves the way they are... sexuality, gender, is like economy or politics, these are topics that kids shouldn't have to worry about.
-
I would agree, if most of those things weren't predicated already on pseudoscience. now i have nothing against homosexuality, but in my life time, i've been told its natural, its nurture, its a choice, its a mental illness, its genetic, its a "corruption of the soul", etc
-
Same here... but I was lucky enough that as a child I was told to like people for things that matter like them being nice and not care about things that don't matter like their skin color, their gender, their social class, etc... they didn't matter because no one talked about it.

reimer was canadian. however i don't disagree with your assessment. it was more food for thought, does it make a difference knowingly (even not fully understanding) or unknowingly having it done.
-
It doesn't make a difference. If you allow children whose brain isn't fully develop to be able to mutilate their body and change their hormonal balance than you also need to allow them to drink alcohol, get tattoos, or cripple themselves as they can identify as transabled.
-
i wasn't thinking to go that far for a 5 year old, i was more thinking of letting them explore, play pretend and then when they are older, let them make the decision they feel is right for 'em.
-
Play pretend is the normal part of growing up... but all the studies have shown that the rate of kids questioning their gender collapses during puberty... so pushing them to transition early is the wrong thing to do... especially when you know the suicide rate of transgenders.
-
and I am against forcing/allowing transitioning before they are old enough to get a credit card or even before they are allowed to smoke or drink.
-
We agree on this. It's just all these articles are pushing for younger and younger transitioning. The majority of detransitioners argue that their dysphoria was caused not by a deep-seated mismatch between their gender identity and their body but rather by mental-health problems.
