I’m not sure the games industry would agree there are no unifying theories about game design, but it is true and well-known that gamification rarely works. One notable exception is the Dropbox referral feature which yielded 50% of their installs.

Interesting POV! Extrinsic satisfaction via rewards is definitely less gratifying than intrinsic. But gamification & rewards can be incredibly addictive & statistically, a game can be considered a success by DAU & purchases. So how do we find the balance when driven by profit?
