I'm watching the newest @cinemassacre YT video and it reminded me of Berry's Chapel Road which I grew up on. I regularly spent time at and around where the chapel and graveyard are. I spent many of days wondering the woods there. https://weirdnj.com/weird-news/berrys-chapel/ … #WeirdNJ #Halloween

The accounts in the WeirdNJ page are accurate. Berry's hedge stone was clearly moved and placed far to the back of the plot. Had been shot at a few times. In the 80's and 90's hedge stones would be stolen and occasionally replaced.

Graves would somewhat regularly get dug up. I never saw a fully dug up grave where the casket could be opened but I did see a number of graves where the casket was visible.

The foundation of the chapel was visible in the 80's but by the late 90's was mostly filled in and hidden by dirt runoff, moss, fallen trees, etc. From the 70's through the 90's it was used as a place for kids to party, do drugs, etc. and lots of trash would be dumped back there.

The hanging tree story is also accurate. It was a very large tree that was mostly dead. The bark was mostly gone and very dark in color. The canopy was gone and only one large branch was left facing into the cemetery with looked like a hook / cup at the end. Never saw rope.

There were always stories of weird things happening down there but mostly just campfire stories. I'm not a believer in the supernatural and never encountered anything unexplainable.

That said: a number of bad things happened on the chapel's plot to friends and myself. I've a number of serious scars from being a stupid kid. A gash on my arm due to a shard of glass flying off from a beer bottle thrown by a friend at a dumped refrigerator.

The skin buckled under itself and somehow there was no blood from the 1-2 inch long slice. Never got stitches. Paper towels and electrical tape was my goto.

Also have a palm sized 3rd degree burn on my calf after a friend set fire to a paper back with plastic in it and tried to put it out by hitting it with a machete (my favorite tool when wondering the woods). A large blob of melted plastic flew and hit my leg. Was wearing shorts.

Far more serious however was a now deceased friend who cut off part of his index finger after attempting to put a popped off chain back on my ATV which he had taken down Berry's Chapel Road with another friend.

Chain came off right in front of the cemetery. He left the engine running and hit the gas while his finger was near the sprocket. He had years of experience with dirt bikes and ATVs so he knew better and thankfully he and his family felt the same. There was no hard feelings.

The road was bought out by local land owners in the late 90's or early 2000's and the town allowed them to close it off. Town had claimed it was a fire route but no fire truck could have ever made it through to the other side. Area is mostly used for hunting now.

There is also a couple lakes in that area which I used and visited as a kid (fishing, ice skating, to relax and read). They are unfortunately now all grown over and almost unreachable. You'd only know they are there due to satellite images.

Its an interesting and beautiful area but given the road and surrounding property is all privately owned now I wouldn't recommend anyone trying to visit the chapel / graveyard.
