This was an eye-opening experience for both of us, one that allowed me to frame institutionally-specific experiences—not as complaints, or for sympathy, but as information—in ways that enabled my chair to understand another type of professional allyship I need.

Our collaborative reading exercise permitted my chair to think critically and *concretely* about my institutionally-specific experiences through the lens of Rockquemore’s book.

Our discussion depended on an investment of my chair’s time; on his being completely receptive to hearing me & understanding my experiences as (my) reality; & on his willingness to apply his learning from Rockquemore, which he committed to and even demonstrated in conversation.

In different ways, Rockquemore’s book has something for everyone—don’t judge the title. If you are an admin. or dept. chair, or know someone who is, I highly recommend you read Rockquemore’s book and encourage others to do so as well. It’s an easy, useful, thought-provoking read.

@profkfh for introducing this book to me when I was in grad school, a couple years before I earned the PhD—that was not at all too soon!Näytä tämä ketju
