I want to modify this statement. Leaders are talking about it, but not as loudly. Part of the reason is folks are unsure of how to tackle it. There’s no singular solution to any problem, but we shouldn’t shy away from trying. Families are suffering and badly.
Now that I’ve gotten these thoughts off my chest, I will return to playing for the foreseeable future. I have some important announcements in the next month or so… so stay tuned for my non-playful tweets.
But even folks who’ve been violent, matter. Someone loves them and needs them in their life. There are ways of responding that don’t include societal or economic disposal (i.e. throwing them away for life or banning them from work as a way of punishment).
I really want us to move from disposability as a solution to every person, especially those brought up in trauma. Grace and accountability may have never been extended in safe ways before. I think it’s totally okay to remove people from your life if it means safety for you.
Also, note the “have capacity” part. We don’t all have ability to try & build with new folks or folks who may not be safe. That’s okay. We can also grow in love with those who make us feel safe & be models for those who may not know what safe, loving, & accountable community is
have capacity to build with folks who may not be doing the work for whatever reason, then through community & connection, we can work with our chosen family & friends to collectively get to a place where we all can feel safe in institutions, neighborhoods, & in our homes.
This is why “building community” is important. There are small communities & social circles filled with people who are especially violent & these folks won’t be able to hold their fam accountable. But, if folks who do the systems & interpersonal work to overcome our harmful ways
Disposing of people, socially or physically, after they commit harm is prison by another name. At some point we’re all harmed & harm others. Attempts for accountability must come from community & chosen family, not societal shame. Also, our community & fam can’t be enablers.
Don’t use pre-made evolve protein shakes as creamer for your coffee after a night out or before a day out. And definitely don’t do it if you go out on both occasions
